How to vet your reader • Best Practices
First thing's first- Let's talk about what you can expect from a reading with Kayla, and how to vet your reader to make sure you're the right fit for one another.
You will want to vet your reader on social media. Your reader should have a strong social media presence. Some readers even offer free readings so you can get a bird's eye view into their services; many have information on their social media platforms like a podcast or video that you can get a really good feel for their personality with. You will want to make sure that you feel an energetic connection with your reader. This is a sign from Spirit that you will learn something powerful from them or have a strong connection with them. Trust your gut!
You will want to check out the reader's reviews and their experience level, for your own comfort. This is why my reviews are included on the page below! Your reader should have a lot of information available about their services, a strong social media presence, a way you can get a feel for them and build trust. Get a feel for their personality, their energy, how they handle if at all possible.
Share AS LITTLE INFORMATION WITH YOUR READER AS POSSIBLE. I have been asked some odd questions over my 18 years of work. Some of them being, don't you need to know about the situation? NO! :) If your reader is going in blind, with no information, and is accurate, you cannot doubt their accuracy. If you are feeding them information, you are creating a bias with your reader. I know it's counterintuitive (haha) because you are wanting to make sure your reader is well informed...but if they are a reader, it's spirit's job to inform them, not yours. While you will be asked confirmation questions often during a reading, your reader should be using it to clarify information received from Spirit and bring you validation. Someone who is genuinely psychic, does not need any information. Their connection with Spirit is what is bringing through the information, so you can trust that your vetted reader will pick up on what you're wanting to know, accurately.
Do they provide evidence. This is more for during a reading. You should know that your reader is talking to YOU specifically, through what comes through in a reading. Your reader should be bringing in facts. If you are someone who is google-able, you should be making sure that these are facts they would NOT know from this- real facts, about your life, about you, that they'd have no way of knowing. This is the evidence we are looking for in a reading. There should be a variety of messages that spirit brings in when the reading begins and throughout, that allow you to know your reader has got you. Many people will be frustrated with a reader for bringing through things that have already happened or they already know- know that this is their spirit team trying to tell you, hey, we know you, we've got you, this is evidence that we are in fact reading your energy.
Be wary of people assuming things through your appearance or assuming things about you. Many people cold read, I've even been cold read. (for shame! They even knew my profession.) You will know if you're being cold read, if someone is using facts you have shared, against you or to base it on fact. Here was my experience being cold read, to give you some context:
I had been visting our local psychic fair, many moons ago. The reader was not busy, and it was recommended I speak to her by a colleague, and I was SO excited. I was within earshot, discussing getting a reading with my partner, and we were talking about finances, nothing crazy. I was wearing a poncho, and am plus sized. I ran out the door that morning, basically.
The reader told me I needed to embrace my body because I had a great sense of style and was hiding it (The poncho.) She focused a lot of my reading on losing weight.Much of this reading was pure assumption and allegtions. (False hope, on something she assumed I cared about.) The reader had heard my conversation with my partner, and since i had sounded stressed (There were a lot of people around me and I struggle with auditory processing especially over a phone) she had told me my partner was not right for me, and that they were controlling. (Not at all accurate.) She knew I was connected with my colleague, and most of the reading was about my colleague and what I would assist her with. (Not a single thing she had shared has occured, and it's been about 8 years.) Many of the readings' facts were based on my appearance, my personality (she assumed I was shy because I was listening to the reading, and told me I needed to speak up more..if you know me, you uh...you know!) Not a single piece of evidene was provided, and things were said to bring impact, and not in a good way. Think very dramatic information. If I didn't know what was happening, this would have made me spiral, and she probably did a lot of harm to a lot of people. This reading had a lot of sensationalist information that would make someone want to book twice- out of fear, not because it was good. These are all massive red flags. This reader did a few readings for people I know, and all of them were deeply inaccurate. I firmly believe that because this person was a traveling psychic as well, they did not care about their accuracy, as it would be a year or more before she returned to the town, and would find a way to con people into believing she was right if they challenged her. These are things you want to look out for. That being said, there are amazing readers at the psychic fair, I think I just ran into one bad one- I hear rave reviews from people about it all the time and have had many good experiences there besides this one, so don't let it hinder you! This is simply to assist you in spotting someone who might not have enough development or whose intentions may be poor.
Be wary of sensationalist information. Yes, difficult information comes through in a reading. Yes, this can be hard to hear. A good reader will deliver it to you with tact, love and grace. They will answer any questions you have about it. They will bring you evidence. They will give you the space you may need to collect yourself, and give you emotional support in those moments. They will not be trying to tell you everything you need to fear about someone, or a situation, without the compassion to guide you through it. A reading is not about making the reader look powerful. Some people who are not devleopped enough in their work forget this. The reading is about YOU. It's about GUIDING you. Not stirring up fear in you, not leaving you terrifed after a reading so you rebook, not watching you and how you react so they know how to hook you with scary information.
Your reader must be truthful with you. It is not our job to comfort you with un truths...it's our job to tell you the truth, even if it stinks, even if it's hard, even if it's something you don't want to hear. We can't control what information comes through. We are not to sugarcoat things either. We need to tell you exactly how it's coming through. That being said, it's not done to generate fear- it's done to provide clarity, it's done to help the unfolding of your intuition and your clarity into your own life, into behaviours you may need to work on, into how you or others may be affecting the situation in a way you did not see, etc. Sometimes this information is hard. Be wary of people who are all sunshine and rainbows in a reading or who struggle delivering negative or difficult information. It is a necessary part of our skills to bring this information to you in a way you can receive it. Be also wary of people who are fear mongering. This is why I encourage getting a feel for your reader through their online presence as much as possible or reaching out to them with any questions you may have about a reading, before a reading. Any good reader will not mind this- we want you to feel safe with us.
If your psychic is vetted, or is part of of an organization that vets their psychic, this helps. (I am part of Sanctuary, an online reading app, and have been thoroughly vetted by one of their top psychics for accuracy and performance and have reviews from this app people can see.) This won't be applicable to everyone and it depends on where they are at in their career- but if they are part of any governing body or association, like for a Reiki Master, the Canadian Reiki Association, or the International Center for Reiki Training, etc, if they have some kind of governing body behind them? Love it if they have it.
BEST PRACTICES! <3
How can you make sure you have a good reading every time, if you've followed everything above, and chosen someone to book with? Here are my own favourite best practices when getting a reading done, and I follow many of these before giving a reading too!
Are you super stressed? When you are super stressed, as one often can be before a reading, this can mess with your understanding of the reading, but can also affect your reader too. It depends on how the readers read, but many of us use the auric field to read so if the auric field is a mess, it can be harder to 'see through', so to speak. This might not apply to every reader, but just in case it does- a nice walk, a hot cup of tea or coffee, something grounding, a weighted blanket, a cozy blanket, cleansing your environment, setting up some lighting for ambiance, soft music- all of this can help you be in a better space for receiving a reading so you can be as present as is possible for you.
If your reader provides energy healing, you can ask for me to do this during the session to assist you! Please send me a message beforehand, and I can do some distant healing before our session for you to help you ground in. You don't need to be present for this, I'll get it done for you right before the reading to help you be present and in your best energy space.
Note taking! Now, listening and being in a receiving space at the same time, can be difficult, especially if you struggle with audio processing, anxiety, or struggle with focus. Please record me, or take notes if that's the case, I highly encourage it! The reason why, is our mind will filter the information in the moment as accurate- innacurate, and that's not always discernable in the moment. When I first started, I used to do typed readings. I had sent one off to a loved one. She had reached out telling me she wasn't sure if it was accurate. Six months later, she wrote all over the email telling me how everything manifested, in exactly the ways i'd described. Our own bias, will look for ways to prove or disprove info but sometimes, there are little nuggets in a reading that you'll look at 6 months later and be like ooohh my goodness THAT is what she meant. Spirit likes to hide little easter eggs for you. I highly recommend recording for this reason, especially if you struggle a lot with overthinking or anxiety. You can also use this reccording before you book a new reading, to decide if you really did vibe with your reader and they were accurate for you!
Debriefing. After a good reading, I like to listen to the recording, or take notes. I always personally take notes because I type like a madwoman but I also record. Because i can see my bias active in my notes. So this is something to consider. I've done readings long enough that I know where my bias is and can account for it most of the time, but, stay humble folks- having both if possible really helps! But go over the reading after having it. Debrief yourself. Take gentle time to process. Sometimes readings can be hard. Break it down with someone you trust, if needed. Reach out to your reader with any clarifications you may need. Note that this is not asking for additional reading outside of paid time- but clarification on something.
Take your day easy after. Some people's bodies need a lot of time to integrate info, because it can be overwhelming. Taking a walk, taking it easy, letting your body process, these can all be helpful to let you integrate anything you need to. Some of this will be logical, and some will be energetic.
Drink a lot of water, it really, really helps with energy healing and integrating psychic information.
